It is being worn now as a fashion statement by residents of many non-Arab countries as well.  To take care of keffiyeh is of utmost importance. It can be source of germs and diseases if not properly washed. To use it for many years, do take proper care of it. Following are some ways to do care of your cotton made keffiyeh. Have a look below to know:
1: HAND WASH: Investing on a good quality scarf will be futile if you do not wash it regularly adopting appropriate method. Hand wash is always preferable for washing the cotton keffiyeh. Avoid using warm water to wash. You just need to fill basin or a large tub with cool water. Add a quality detergent. Rub the keffiyeh by hands in water. Make sure it is totally wet. Keep the keffiyeh in water for 15 minutes. Drain water afterwards.  Wash it again under tap water. Again use cold water. Keep on washing and cleaning by squeezing and rubbing until no detergent foam or lather left. Now squeeze it again gently to drain water. Place the keffiyeh on a clean towel and roll it to suck wetness completely. Now unroll it and lay it off again on a clean dry towel in order for a complete good dryness. Remember, you should avoid hanging the keffiyeh on a wire or rope to dry. This can seriously damage its fabric.
2: MACHINE WASH: If it is clearly mentioned in the washing instructions on keffiyeh label that it is a machine washable, then go ahead with it. But still hand washing and air drying is recommended .
3: IRONING KEFFIYEH: Ironing is necessary for cotton-made keffiyeh. Washing often does not allow the shrinks go. So, proper ironing with right kind of technique can take away shrinks from a cotton keffiyeh. Spray some water on it before ironing. It helps in removing shrinks. Spraying water before ironing also gives a fine and finish look to your keffiyeh. Iron keffiyeh if it is little bit damp or wet after washing. This makes the ironing easy without spraying water.  It would definitely look new this way. In case of steam iron, there is no need to spray water as steam iron automatically absorbs dampness. Spraying some starch will help to uphold the crisp and neatness in cotton-made keffiyeh.
When it comes to keffiyeh, cotton is no doubt the most used material. Shemaghs or keffiyehs come in different color combinations like red and white, the most popular black and white, grey and white and much more. As far as fabric is concerned, cotton is preferred for its durability, ease of use and comfort. Only the right washing and ironing techniques can keep your keffiyeh last long for use.
